Edward M. Arons, Ph.D., Esq.

Partner

Ted’s broad scientific background, coupled with his extensive legal experience, enables him to fully engage the intellectual property needs of his technology clients. Over the years he has represented major international corporations, investors and technology start-ups in fields including biomedical engineering, electronics, optics, electromagnetics, materials science, energy, geophysics and quantitative processes.

Drawing upon his diverse technical and legal background, Ted extracts intellectual property assets from the R&D laboratory, communicates their business value to management and investors, and develops patent portfolios to protect the assets and spur fundraising.  Ted has significant experience presenting IP value propositions to prospective investors.

Because of Ted’s extensive experience representing technology companies, Ted has been called upon by many corporate acquirers and investors (including VC and PE) to conduct due diligence investigations and provide advice regarding key product pipeline development, M&A IP risk, and licensing. For strategic IP planning, Ted has often been called upon to render legal opinions regarding the scope of rights held by clients or their competitors.

Prior to joining Joel Weiss to found Weiss & Arons, LLP, Ted practiced at Fish & Neave, which later became Ropes & Gray. He has counseled clients in connection with approximately $900M worth of technology-based transactions, many of them involving medical, diagnostic and analytical laboratory instruments. His mechanical and electromagnetic technology clients include a top international pharmaceutical company, a top U.S. biotech company, cutting edge telecommunication, material science, orthopedic and cardiology companies, and numerous consumer products companies. Ted’s strategic patent portfolios for start-up medical device companies alone have led to nearly $100M in venture capital funding.
